Day 23

Thursdays I have Paris collage, my art and architecture class that is a lecture for the first half and an outing for the second half. We went to Notre-dame AGAIN. It's my 3rd time going and I would have been tired of it except that I did learn some new things. First, Notre-dame means "our lady;" that's basic French 101, I don't know why I never noticed. Anywho, this lady of course is miss Virgin Mary. So the cathedral is dedicated to her and that's visible in the doors and their decor. Notre-dame is THE Cathedral of Paris. Everything other place is simply a church. That's what makes this place extra famous I guess. Notre-dame is in the gothic form and was built to large and that's why barely any light gets in. Despite this image of darkness that we have when we think of the gothic, gothic architecture was actually originally created as a form of letting in more light. One of the style's key features is having a lot of stain glass to let in more light. Blah Blah more architect stuff...
It was a cold cold day and I felt my toes freeze outside of Notre-Dame. Je n'aime pas :( But I will have to return when the weather is warm to climb up to the bell towers! Definitely interested in reading The Hunchback of Notre-Dame now. Adieu
